Alistair Drysdale

Alistair Drysdale’s distinctive, rugged Expressionistic style often features distorted houses, landscapes, or seascapes. He worked primarily with oil, and counted the Group of Seven among his major influences, as well as Paul Klee and Paul Cézanne. A solo show was mounted at this gallery in 1992

Born in St. John’s in 1932, Drysdale studied drawing with the Dutch artist Hans Melis in St. John’s in the 1960s and ’70s. He taught electronics at the local College of Trades and Technology until turning to art full-time in the 1980s. He died in St. John’s in 2005.

Alistair Drysdale’s work is in several public collections; a larger number of his paintings is in private collections outside Newfoundland. He won several awards in the Provincial Arts and Letters competitions during his career, and received grants from the Provincial Arts Council.
